Top-up to a BA (Hons) Degree?

James Thomas.jpg

First Class Success!

James Thomas first came to St Helens College as a school leaver several years ago, studying first the National Diploma in Art and Design and progressing directly to the then HND in Graphic Design, this being the subject area that captured his imagination. After successfully completing his HND, James decided to broaden his horizons and travel, initially heading for New Zealand.

Using the design portfolio compiled during his studies, James immediately secured employment as a graphic designer in a local company. The impressive design skills acquired during his studies were clearly evident and James found himself offered the Saks group as a client. This included the prestigious designer labels Hugo Boss and Versace. T

he clients were so impressed with his work, they offered James employment initially at their local office in New Zealand and then at the head office in Chicago, USA. After successfully working in the States, James continued to travel and set off on a tour of Australia.

On returning to St Helens he decided to undertake further study on the BA (Hons) Digital Graphic Design degree course.  A combination of his previous qualifications (HND) and his professional work experience enabled James to enter the degree course at the third year of the programme by way of APEL, (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning).

James said at the time, ìWhen I realised I wanted to undertake more study, I had no hesitation in returning to St Helens College.  My previous experience of being a student here was so positive, and I received lots of individual attention and support.  Using my existing qualifications alongside my work experience, I was able to enter directly onto the final year of the BA.  I think once Iíve achieved a BA it will open even more doors for me in the future.

James was rewarded for his efforts when he was awarded a First Class Honours Degree from the University of Huddersfield in June 2008.  He is now considering progressing onto a Masters degree or setting up his own business, either in the UK, or not surprisingly, somewhere overseas.
